Western Province were 99-3 when bad light ended play on day four of the five-day domestic final at the Wanderers.
Proteas duo Tony de Zorzi (38*) and Kyle Verreynne (27*) were at the crease, with WP still needing another 209 runs to win.
The visitors had started their run chase well, with a 55-run partnership between De Zorzi and Edward Moore, before the latter was dismissed by Lions spinner Bjorn Fortuin for 26.
The hosts then struck another two big blows in quick succession, as Malusi Siboto dismissed Yaseen Vallie for a duck and Fortuin had Gavin Kaplan caught bat-pad, also for nought.
Earlier, Delano Potgieter (155*) and Codi Yusuf (46) had propelled the Lions to a total of 394 after they had been 113-6 and then 159-7.
That set WP a challenging target of 308.
