The Central Gauteng Lions lifted the 4-Day Domestic Series trophy at the Wanderers on Sunday after an incredible comeback win against Western Province.
The Lions recovered from 35-5 in their first innings of the five-day final to post 225, before bowling WP out for 312 after the visitors had been 286-5.
In their second innings, the Lions were reduced to 113-6 and led by just 26 runs. But Man of the Match Delano Potgieter, who had scored 81 in the first innings, struck an unbeaten 155* to propel the hosts to 394.
That set WP a challenging total of 308 to win.
They made a good start, putting on 55 for the opening wicket, before losing three wickets in quick succession.
WP resumed their run chase on Sunday at 99-3, and lost three wickets during an extended first session, including overnight batsmen Kyle Verreynne (40) and Tony de Zorzi (55), trapped lbw by pace bowler Codi Yusuf and spinner Bjorn Fortuin, respectively.
Province’s hopes evaporated when Daniel Smith (52) fell lbw to Fortuin shortly after lunch, and they were all out for 208, giving the Lions a 99-run win.
Fortuin finished with excellent figures of 5-69 from 26 overs.
