Former Proteas all-rounder Lance Klusener has been appointed head coach of Afghanistan.

Klusener was the Proteas’ batting coach for the recent T20I series against India.

He was the head coach of the Brampton Wolves in the 2019 edition of the Global T20 Canada – and was due to work with the Glasgow Giants in the Euro T20 Slam this year. The tournament, however, was postponed. He also coached Zimbabwe and the Dolphins – and worked with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

‘I am extremely excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to work with some of the best talent in world cricket,’ said Klusener.

‘Everyone knows the fearless brand of cricket Afghanistan play. I am very confident that with some hard work we can become one of the best sides in the world.

‘I am really looking forward to working with the Afghanistan team and helping them take their cricket to the next level.’

The 48-year-old Klusener played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs between 1996 and 2004 – and was named Player of the Tournament after the 1999 World Cup.

Klusener’s tenure with Afghanistan will commence with November and December’s one-off Test, three ODIs and as many T20Is against the West Indies.
