Lance Klusener is the big favourite to become the new head coach of the Proteas white-ball teams.
The former Proteas all-rounder will coach Durban’s Super Giants in the inaugural SA20 league.
Klusener was Afghanistan’s head coach from 2019 to 2021. He had previously been Zimbabwe’s batting coach and rejoined the team in that role in early 2022.
According to Rapport newspaper, Klusener, Shukri Conrad, Rob Walter, Richard Pybus, Adrian Birrell and Malibongwe Maketa are all on CSA’s shortlist for the two separate positions of Test head coach and white-ball head coach.
All six candidates except Klusener applied for both positions.
“There were many candidates who were interested,” CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe told Rapport. “There were many South Africans – local and those based abroad – who applied.”
The candidates were interviewed in December and the process to appoint the new coaches is already at an advanced stage, Rapport understands.
