Lance Klusener insists the withdrawal of his application for the Proteas coaching job won’t be a distraction during the SA20.
The former South Africa all-rounder was believed to be the leading candidate to take over as the Proteas’ limited-overs coach before he took himself out of consideration earlier this week.
Klusener’s decision was influenced by his desire to focus on his coaching roles within franchise T20 cricket. His next assignment in that regard is with Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 league.
“It’s not really a distraction,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday. “I’m committed to the Super Giants now and I’ve actually withdrawn my application from the national team coaching position.
“My focus is solely on the Super Giants here and in the T20 leagues going forward.”
The Super Giants get their SA20 campaign underway on Wednesday at Kingsmead against Faf du Plessis’ Joburg Super Kings.
“Kingsmead is always hard to read, but we’re expecting a traditional wicket on Wednesday,” he said. “It might be a bit slow, and should take some spin, but it will be nothing different to what we’ve got here in the past few seasons.”

The Super Giants’ preparation has been impacted by KwaZulu-Natal’s wet weather, but Klusener says they used the time positively.
“It’s been good. We had two days of rain, but it was not a bad thing, as it allowed us to catch up on volume indoors. Before that we had three good days outside.
“It’s been a long build-up since the competition was launched, so the boys are excited to get going. Hopefully, we put on a good show here at home.
“We’re gonna win [the competition],” joked Klusener. “We’ve got a fantastic team, with some World Cup winners, so we expect to be there [at the end].
“It’s a rocky road to make the playoffs, but there is no reason why we can’t be there on 11 February.”
