Former Proteas opener Gary Kirsten is no longer coach of the Welsh Fire after the board’s decision to end his tenure following a winless 2022 campaign.
Kirsten has been with the Fire since the Hundred was first played two seasons ago and began well by winning his first two games in charge.
However, since then things have gone from bad to worse as they only managed to win one other game in the first Hundred season and finished second last in the standings.
The team underwent a major overhaul during the draft, with Kirsten planning to build his team around England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. However, he has since regained his position within the England squad and has only played for the Fire twice.
Results did not pick up at all this year either, in fact, they got worse. The Kirsten-led Fire failed to win a match in the 2022 season.
It is therefore not that much of a surprise the team’s higher-ups decided to part ways with Kirsten, who confirmed the news to ESPNcricinfo.
The early favourite to be his replacement is former England assistant coach Paul Farbrace after he made himself available to the Hundred teams earlier this season following leaving his post at Warwickshire,
