A powerful partnership between Chris Gayle and Mandeep Singh helped the Kings XI Punjab cruise to a comfortable eight-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday.
Kings XI have found some formidable form in the back end of this competition, with this proving to be their fifth win in a row.
Plaudits should go to Gayle (51) and Singh (66*), who combined for a superb 100-run partnership that took the game away from KKR, but this victory was effectively laid by the bowlers.
Although Kolkata opener Shubman Gill batted manfully to top-score with 57, Mohammed Shami made his presence felt with a bowling return of 3-35, while Murugan Ashwin, Chris Jordan and Ravi Bishnoi all produced economical spells to strangle the life out of KKR.
With the Knight Riders battling their way to 149-9, it was never going to be enough, and soon as Gayle and Singh began to fire, there was only ever going to be one winner.
