Five schools go into the final day of the Michaelmas Festival in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday with three wins out of three under their belts, writes THEO GARRUN.
King Edward beat highly-rated Hilton College by six wickets on Monday, following wins over the CSA Tap team and Westville on the first two days, and they go into their final encounter against Kearsney on Tuesday looking like the most impressive side on view.
St Stithians beat CSA Tap by eight wickets on Monday, having bowled them out for just 70, and they too are looking very good. They beat Westville and Clifton in their earlier encounters and face St Charles in their last game.
Grey College is the only non-Gauteng team to win three out of three so far. They beat Clifton on Monday after earlier defeating Michaelhouse and Maritzburg College.
The Pretoria schools – Affies and Boys’ High – are the other teams who are unbeaten going into the final day.
The conditions in KZN have certainly favoured the batsmen this week and there were some big scores again on Monday. The only century was scored by Hilton’s James Ritchie, who made 107 in a losing cause against KES.
There were also some big half-centuries on the day, with Jason Bracher’s 89 for KES securing the game against Hilton and Jacques van der Walt scoring 72 not out for Maritzburg College against St John’s. Ciaran Bigwood of Northwood got his third score of the week (78 not out against Hudson Park), Guy Rushmere of St Andrew’s made 70 in his side’s win over Westville, Danwich Beukes of Grey College got 74 against Clifton, and Hilton’s Michael Sclanders scored 53 against KES to follow up his 150 against Westlake on day two.
Some of the games on the final day will be played as T20s to allow the inland teams to start their journeys home early.
