• Kallis the pick of Masters T20

    The lure of Jacques Kallis is undiminished, despite his absence from the mainstream game. He was designated an ‘Icon’ in the Masters Champions League T20 auction and sold for $175,000.

    The Masters Champions League T20, consisting only of retired international players, will be played in the UAE in January and February. The six teams, named after six zodiac signs, on Monday splashed their budget of $750,000 on some of the greats of the game. Below the Icons, were the A+ players – those with 100 international caps.

    Two ‘Legends’ apiece were bought by each team before the auction for a total of $100,000. Graeme Smith went to Team Virgo, along with Azhar Mahmood. The other legends are: Team Capricorn: Abdul Razzaq (Pakistan), Michael Vaughan (England); Team Gemini: Virender Sehwag (India), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka); Team Leo: Scott Styris (New Zealand), Heath Streak (Zimbabwe); Team Libra: Sourav Ganguly (India), Graeme Swann (England); Team Sagittarius: Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka), Daniel Vettori (New Zealand)

    Kallis, one of six ‘Icons’, was snapped up by team Libra. Behind him came Adam Gilchrist (Australia, $170,000 to Team Sagittarius), Paul Collingwood (England, $140,000 to Team Capricorn), Muttaiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka,  $120,000 to Team Gemini), Brett Lee (Australia, $100,000 to Team Virgo) and Brian Lara (West Indies,  $100,000 to Team Leo).

    Among the A+ Saffa players were Jonty Rhodes ($40,000 to Team Virgo), Herschelle Gibbs ($40,000 to Team Leo), Neil McKenzie ($52,000 to Team Virgo), Ashwell Prince ($39,000 to Team Capricorn), Robin Peterson ($80,000 to Team Leo) and Johan Botha ($46,000 to Team Leo)

    Among the international stars are :
