Jamaican Donovan Miller has been named head coach of the Jozi Stars for the 2019 Mzansi Super League.

Miller is currently part of the England technical team for the Ashes series. He also worked with England during the 2019 World Cup.

He was part of the Jozi Stars’ coaching staff for last year’s inaugural Mzansi Super League and has succeeded former head coach Enoch Nkwe. Nkwe has been appointed interim team director of the Proteas.

‘We’re delighted that Donovan is joining the Jozi Stars once again, this time stepping up his responsibilities into the head coach role after a successful shadowing of Enoch,’ said outgoing Central Gauteng Lions chief executive officer Greg Fredericks.

‘Donovan knows how we work and his vast T20 experience will be hugely beneficial to us as we endeavour to ensure the trophy remains in our cabinet.’

Miller has also worked with the Vancouver Knights in the Global T20 Canada, Essex in English county cricket, and the Jamiaca Tallawahs, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League.

‘I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Jozi Stars for giving me the opportunity to lead such a special franchise. I had a wonderful time there last year and cannot wait to join up with the squad come November,’ added Miller.

Fredericks, meanwhile, has been succeeded by entrepreneur Jono Leaf-Wright as Central Gauteng Lions chief executive officer. Leaf-Wright worked alongside Miller during the Jozi Stars’ title-winning MSL campaign in 2018.

‘Donovan’s attention to detail and connectivity with the players was admirable and when we had a gap in the head coach department. With Enoch having been called up to the Proteas, it was an easy appointment choice,’ concluded Leaf-Wright.

‘I wish him and the entire squad well in season two of the Mzansi Super League and I know that the Jozi Stars brand will go from strength to strength as we defend the trophy and look to retain the title of champions in 2019.’
