In a final preparation ahead of Michaelmas Week, Jeppe beat touring New Zealand school side Westlake by 103 runs on Heritage Day Monday, writes THEO GARRUN.
Auckland-based Westlake are regular visitors to these parts – they come every second year, and they will be in action in Pietermaritzburg at the Michaelmas festival. They make a stop in Pretoria first, however, where they will meet Pretoria Boy’s High on Tuesday.
It will be a busy three weeks for the tourists. From Maritzburg they go to Cape Town, where they will play SACS, Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Bishops and Wynberg.
Jeppe batted first on Monday and posted a useful 281-6 in their 50 overs. Top-scorer was Levert Manje with 65, closely followed by Matthew van Dyk, who got 64.
The tourists battled against the spin of Cian Robertson and Dillon Kirkland, who took 2-40 and 3-14 respectively as they bowled Westlake out for 179 with six overs in hand. Jock McKenzie looked very useful with the bat for them and he was unlucky to go out on 47.
Jeppe will play Hilton, Michaelhouse, DHD and Westville at the Michaelmas Festival, while Westlake take on Northwood, Hilton, Kearsney and Maritzburg College.
