Dane Vilas and Keaton Jennings missed out on winner’s medals as Lancashire suffered a one-run defeat to Hampshire in England’s T20 Blast final in Birmingham on Saturday.
Jennings, the son of former Proteas coach Ray, scored 24 off 20 balls, and captain Vilas 23 off 21 as Lancashire dramatically finished on 151-8 in reply to Hampshire’s 152-8.
With Lancashire needing four to win off the last ball, Australia limited-overs paceman Nathan Ellis bowled Richard Gleeson. But as Hampshire celebrated, with fireworks launched into the Birmingham sky, replays revealed a no-ball.
That left Lancashire needing only two to win.
After the smoke had cleared, Gleeson missed the free hit but he and Tom Hartley scampered through for a single and then appeared to complete a second run that would have been enough to level the scores and give victory to Lancashire as their powerplay score was superior, with the sides also tied in losing eight wickets.
However, despite Vilas remonstrating with the umpires at the end, it was deemed a dead ball had been called before the second run was completed.
Ben McDermott – the son of former Australia fast bowler Craig McDermott – top-scored with 62 in what seemed to be Hampshire’s modest total after they had defeated Somerset in the semi-finals, with Lancashire seeing off arch-rivals Yorkshire.
