Shreyas Iyer’s 40-ball 93 and Prithvi Shaw’s 44-ball 62 helped the Delhi Daredevils post an unchased 220-run target to set up a 55-run victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Delhi.
The Delhi Daredevils’ innings was dominated by their two young stars – Iyer and Shaw.
U19 World Cup winner Shaw put in a solid performance for the Delhi Daredevils up front. After being put in to bat, Shaw formed part of two key partnerships to help his side put 127 on the board before losing his wicket.
The 18-year-old contributed 62 off 44 balls, including seven fours and two sixes, and strung together 59 and 68 with Colin Munro (18-ball 33) and Iyer respectively.
Iyer took over after his side lost three for 129 and, with help from Glenn Maxwell (27 off 18 balls), took the Daredevils past the 200-run mark. Despite Maxwell being run out in the 20th over, Iyer smashed four sixes and a four to take his side to 219-4.
The 23-year-old, who took over the captaincy after Gautam Gambhir stepped down, scored 93 off 40 balls consisting of 10 sixes and three fours.
Despite losing five wickets, the Kolkata Knight Riders reached 118-5 by the 13th over, matching DD’s score who were 118-1 at the same stage.
Andre Russell and Shubman Gill were key to their side staying in the match. Their sixth-wicket partnership of 64 took the hosts within 79 runs of victory with 27 balls remaining, when Gill was run out on 37 off 29 balls, with three fours and one six.
KKR went from 141-6 to 141-7 as Amit Mishra (2-23) dismissed Shivam Mavi for a duck as the task slipped closer toward the impossible.
Avesh Khan’s superb yorker to dismiss Russell (44 off 3o balls) basically sealed the game for the home side as KKR slipped to 144-8.
KKR could only manage 164-9 in their 20 overs, losing by 55 runs. The Delhi Daredevils’ victory ended their three-match losing streak, lifting them one spot from the foot of the table.
