Ahead of the 17th edition of the IPL, InsideSport looks at the records that could be broken this season.
Individual records
- Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore) could increase his record for the most career runs (current record: 7,263) and he could also become the first player to score 7,500 runs.
- Kohli could increase his record for the most centuries scored (current record: seven).
- Kohli could break Suresh Raina’s record for the most career catches (109), since Kohli’s career catches are currently 106; this record could also be passed by Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians, 98 career catches) or Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings, 97 career catches).
- Yuzvendra Chahal (Rajasthan Royals) could increase his record for the most career wickets (current record: 187), but this record could also be passed by Piyush Chawla (Mumbai Indians, 179 wickets), Amit Mishra (Lucknow Super Giants, 173 wickets) or Ravichandran Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals, 171 wickets); Chahal could also become the first player to bag 200 wickets in IPL.
- MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) could increase his record for the most career dismissals (wicketkeeping, current record: 180), but his record could also be equaled or passed by Dinesh Karthik (Royal Challengers Bangalore); Dhoni and Karthik are also first and second, respectively, when it comes to the most career catches (Dhoni: 138, Karthik: 133) and the most career stumpings (Dhoni: 42, Karthik: 36), so these records could also be potentially extended/broken.
- Two players from the Sunrisers Hyderabad have a chance to make history by becoming the first player to take three five-wicket hauls in the IPL since both of them have managed to do so on two occasions and they could do so again this year: Jaydev Unadkat (2013 & 2017) or Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017 & 2023); Kumar would also become the first player to do so in two consecutive years if he managed to take five-wicket haul in 2024
- Shikhar Dhawan (Punjab Kings) could become only second player to score 7,000 runs in IPL – he is currently second in the most runs list with 6,617.
- David Warner (Delhi Capitals) could become the first overseas player to score 6,500 runs in IPL – he currently has 6,397 runs.
Team records
Chennai Super Kings
- CSK could break their tie with the Mumbai Indians and become the sole holder of the record for the most titles won (they have won five times – 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023).
- If CSK win the title, it would make it a first time in history that a team wins two years in a row on two separate occasions – they first won consecutively in 2010 and 2011, and they also won the title last year.
- CSK could extend their record for the most second-place finishes (they have ended up in second place five times – 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2019).
- CSK could extend their record for the most first, second and third place finish (they finished first, second or third record-breaking 11 times, with the Mumbai Indians in second place with eight first, second or third placements).
Mumbai Indians
- Mumbai could break their tie with CSK and become the sole holder of the record for the most titles won (they have won five times – 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020).
- Mumbai could extend their record of the most matches played (current record: 247), as well as the most matches won (current record: 138), depending on how far they get this season.
Delhi Capitals
- The Capitals could extend their record for the most third-place finishes (they have ended up in second place four times – 2009, 2012, 2019, 2021).
- The Capitals could extend their record for the most overall matches lost (127), depending on how they do this season.
Punjab Kings
- DC’s record for the most overall matches lost (127) could be passed by PK, who are not far behind with 124 lost matches.
Rajasthan Royals
- The Royals could break CSK’s record for the most years in between a team’s first and last title victory (the current record is 13 years span since CSK first won in 2010 and the last time 2023) – the Royals first won in 2008, so a win in 2024 would make it 16 years between their first and last title victory.
