The uncapped Shubman Gill has been named in India’ squad for next month’s three Tests against the Proteas.
Gill captained India A against South Africa A earlier this month, striking a near century in a first-class victory in Thiruvananthapuram. His 90 was gathered against an opposition attack lined with Test experience, including fast bowler Lungi Ngidi and Dane Piedt.
‘As a batsman, I like to be aggressive but it is very important for one to understand as to what time you have to be aggressive and when you should temper your game and get through a spell when the bowler is on top,’ said Gill.
Batsman Rohit Sharma, who has not played Test cricket since December 2018, has been included in the squad as well. Sharma has been earmarked to open the batting.
‘Yes, we are definitely looking at him as an opener, and we want to give him an opportunity. He himself is keen, and all of us in the selection committee are keen as well. We want to push him, and give him some opportunities up the order, and see where he stands, and then we will take a call,’ added chief selector Mannava Prasad.
