Beuran Hendricks vows to bring a unique set of skills and variety to the Proteas bowling attack with the aim to revive the side’s World Cup hopes.
The left-arm seamer was a late call-up to the Proteas’ squad after the injury to Dale Steyn. He comes into the camp with the mood in disarray after three losses out of three.

Hendricks, however, does not aim to replace Steyn, but rather to provide the side with something different and unique.
‘When I got the call I didn’t know who I was replacing. Then it hit the media, and I saw it was Dale [Steyn]. Which is a massive blow.
‘I’m not going to say I can fill his shoes. I come with my own set of skills and ambitions. For me, it’s about making sure I can fight a good fight, and contribute with the set off skills that I have and put the team in good positions when I’m in the field.
‘With me coming in I’m not going to analyse too much. Things will change and it will be a different approach having lost three and needing to win six, so I have to adapt to that and get on board with what the plans are.
‘Variety is good in any side. The best teams in the world have different skills in every department, so I bring my set of skills. It’s now between me, Faf and Ottis about what I can bring to the team.
‘I’m excited and it is a dream come true. Every kid’s dream is to play a World Cup, it’s the biggest stage. I’m looking to win it.’

There would have been a quick turnaround from when Hendricks found out that he was on standby to when he was told to fly to the UK. Despite this, he feels he is fully prepared.
‘I’ve been preparing since I got the call to be on standby, I think it’s been about three weeks now,’ he said.
‘So I have put in enough training to come here and be prepared. I was on the couch watching TV when I got the call. It was a rush to come in here within 12 hours, but I’m excited to be here.’
Hendricks has a List A average of 33.40 with 88 wickets in 68 matches. He has played two ODIs and has taken one wicket. His T20 record is decent, with 16 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 18.93.
