Graeme Smith has agreed in principle to be South Africa’s first-ever director of cricket, with a formal contract expected to be concluded on Wednesday.
In what has been a dramatic couple of weeks for SA cricket, some decisive action was finally taken on Saturday, with the big news that Smith was in the final stages of agreeing to terms for his new role.

Smith had initially interviewed for the director of cricket post last month, but later withdrew interest. The position had been previously held in an acting capacity by former coach Corrie van Zyl, who is suspended.
However, last weekend the Sunday Times ran an article suggesting Smith was back in the running, and while he distanced himself from that report, it seems that negotiations have finally reached a point where a deal is set to be struck.
CSA president Chris Nenzani said at a briefing on Saturday that Smith had agreed that by next week Wednesday contract negotiations about him taking over as director of cricket should be concluded.
Meanwhile, the CSA board will continue in its capacity, and there are no other expected resignations, while Northerns CEO Jacques Faul has been appointed as the acting CSA CEO, effective immediately.
