• Gibbs to coach the Thunders

Former Proteas batsman Herschelle Gibbs has been named head coach of the Sylhet Thunders ahead of this year’s Bangladesh Premier League.

Gibbs has coached the Kuwait national team and was going to work with the Rotterdam Rhinos in the inaugural Euro T20 Slam earlier this year. The tournament. however, was postponed.

‘Gibbs is the head coach. Imran Sarowar will be our team advisor and mentor,’ said team director Tanjil Chowdhury.

Gibbs will coach, among others, West Indian trio Sheldon Cottrell, Sherfane Rutherford and Johnson Charles at the Thunders.

Former Proteas coach Ottis Gibson, meanwhile, will work with the Comilla Warriors.

South Africans Rilee Rossouw and Cameron Delport will play for the Khulna Tigers and Rangpur Riders, respectively.

Earlier this year, Gibbs publicly questioned the appointment of Lions head coach Enoch Nkwe as team director of the Proteas for an important tour of India. Gibbs suggested the Titans’ Mark Boucher or Cape Cobras’ Ashwell Prince should have been appointed.

‘I see one good season gets you in as coach of the Proteas. Easy as that. Unlucky, Mark and Ashwell,’ he wrote on Twitter.

Prince and Boucher are currently coaching the Cape Town Blitz and Tshwane Spartans, respectively, in the 2019 edition of the Mzansi Super League in South Africa.
