• Moores quashes Proteas link

Former England coach Peter Moores has quietened speculation about his candidacy to replace former Proteas coach Ottis Gibson.

Earlier this month, Cricket South Africa announced Gibson’s contract has not been extended. He has since been succeeded, on an interim basis, by team director Enoch Nkwe. A permanent appointment will be made after the September and October tour of India.

The 56-year-old Moores had two stints with England. The first ended on the back of a fallout with then captain Kevin Pietersen and the second in the wake of a poor 2015 World Cup campaign. He is currently working with Nottinghamshire.

‘With South Africa, it’s paper speculation. You can’t help that as a coach. Post-World Cup, there’s movement because it’s the end of an international cycle,’ Moores was quoted as saying by Nottinghamshire Live.

‘There’s nothing in it from my end. I’m focusing on the job here, which is to get our red-ball cricket where we want it to be. We’ve been competitive in white-ball cricket, but we’re not where we want to be in red-ball.

‘I’ve not looked any further than enjoying working for Notts. The main job is to move things forward and improve the players.’

CSA will soon advertise the positions of director of cricket, team manager and convenor of selectors. Former coach Corrie van Zyl will be the acting director of cricket until a full-time appointment has been made.
