England’s Peter Moores is reportedly among the candidates to succeed outgoing Proteas head coach Ottis Gibson.
Cricket South Africa announced late last week that Gibson’s contract has not been extended. Assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa, fielding coach Justin Ontong, spin bowling coach Claude Henderson, batting coach Dale Benkenstein and convenor of selectors Linda Zondi have also not been retained.
The 56-year-old Moores had two stints with England. The first ended on the back of a fallout with then captain Kevin Pietersen and the second in the wake of a poor 2015 World Cup campaign. He is currently working with Nottinghamshire.
‘Moores is an absolute master at remaining calm no matter the situation and always encouraging players to be positive,’ said England and Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales.
‘With regard to white-ball cricket, having a relaxed, positive environment to train and play in is one of the most important things to bring the best out of players and a team.’
Nottinghamshire captain Steven Mullaney added: ‘Peter gives players freedom to express themselves. He’s just a great bloke. That comes before everything else with him.
‘He reads the game and has a knack of knowing what will happen before it does.’
An interim management team, selection panel and captain will be appointed for the Proteas’ upcoming tour of India.
Meanwhile, CSA will advertise the positions of director of cricket, team manager and convenor of selectors. Former coach Corrie van Zyl will be the interim director of cricket until a full-time appointment has been made.
