• Du Plessis still Test skipper

Interim director of cricket Corrie van Zyl has confirmed the retention of batsman Faf du Plessis as captain. Du Plessis’ future as ODI and T20I skipper, though, remains in the balance.

‘Faf will be the captain of the Test team and then we will talk about the white-ball strategy to 2023 and how that will affect decision-making,’ said Van Zyl.

‘It’s important to look forward to 2023 as well. We need a strategy to 2023, so in terms of appointing the captain we will look at how we approach that. We are having a selection meeting in the next day and a half to confirm that.’

Late last week, Cricket South Africa announced head coach Ottis Gibson and convenor of selectors Linda Zondi’s contracts will not be extended. Batting coach Dale Benkenstein, fielding coach Justin Ontong, assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa and spin bowling coach Claude Henderson have also not been retained.

The Proteas will tour India for three T20Is and as many Tests in September and October 2019. The tourists will be without fast bowler Dale Steyn for the Test series. Steyn retired from the longest format of the international game this week, but will remain available for ODI and T20I selection.
