The new Proteas coaches have yet to decide whether Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma will retain their captaincy roles.
On Monday, Shukri Conrad was appointed Proteas Test coach, with Rob Walter in charge of the limited-overs teams.
“Look, there are going to be some tough conversations,” Conrad told Rapport newspaper when asked if Elgar would continue as Test captain.
“It would be unfair of me to say now: ‘Yes, he will’ or ‘no, he will no longer [be captain].’ I will first hold discussions with Enoch [Nkwe, CSA director of cricket]. I also want to talk to the selectors.”
When asked about Bavuma’s captaincy, Walter replied diplomatically: “He is very competitive, so he will want to put in good performances first and foremost.
“I just want to get my feet under the desk first and understand where he stands, and how he sees his future. We’ll take it from there.”
Rapport understands that the Proteas selection panel, Nkwe and the new coaches will discuss the captaincy after the SA20 tournament.
Bavuma has retained the ODI captaincy for the three-match series against England in Bloemfontein and Kimberley, which starts on Friday.
Conrad will oversee the team as Walter will only return from New Zealand on the day of the third ODI.
