The Proteas will be looking to make early inroads on day two of the third Test after posting 259-9 declared.
Usman Khawaja (3) and debutant Matt Renshaw (8) did well to survive a tricky 12-over spell under lights at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday night, with all four bowlers, including debutant Tabraiz Shamsi, given a run around with the pink ball.
Australia have the task of chipping away at the 245-run deficit, this after a mesmerising sixth Test ton from Faf du Plessis, soaking up all of the pressure and hype surrounding him following the ball-tampering allegations that swamped the build-up to this match.
Du Plessis made the interesting call to declare with the knowledge that David Warner wouldn’t be able to open the batting due to being off the field for too long. Time will tell as to whether that decision pays off or not, for Renshaw and Khawaja are still there and Warner will want to prove a point when the South Africans do eventually find the breakthrough.
