Former Proteas batsman JP Duminy’s quick-fire cameo was not enough to prevent the Winnipeg Hawks from slipping to a 24-run defeat by the Montreal Tigers in Thursday’s Global T20 Canada fixture at the CAA Centre in Brampton.
The match was reduced to 12 overs per side, leaving West Indian Sunil Narine and New Zealander Anton Devcich to push the Tigers to a final total of 133-3. Narine struck 59 to Devicich’s 40 not out.

Duminy bowled two expensive and wicketless overs, but later struck a brisk 30 to keep the Hawks in the hunt. His brief stay spanned a mere 14 deliveries and featured three sixes. The veteran left-hander enjoyed solid support from Pakistan’s Umar Akmal, but the remainder of the middle order failed. The Hawks’ 111-5, indeed, proved insufficient.
The Global T20 Canada also includes other South Africans, such as the Vancouver Knights’ Rassie van der Dussen and Andile Phehlukwayo and the Edmonton Royals’ Faf du Plessis.
Du Plessis, meanwhile, has been contracted as a supplementary player for the Belfast Titans in the inaugural Euro T20 Slam, which will be played in the Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland later this year.
