The Dolphins won the CSA U19 Cubs title in Stellenbosh after winning their fourth game in a row on Sunday, writes THEO GARRUN.
The Dolphins beat the host Cape Cobras by 47 runs at the University grounds, having posted 270 runs in their 50 overs, the biggest score of the week. Their innings was built around a superb century from SA U19 batsman Thamsanqa Khumalo. He faced 129 balls and struck 15 fours in his innings of 113, in the process putting on 124 runs for the third wicket with Andile Mogokane, who scored 56 runs.
The Cobras’ Ruan Terblanche led the reply by scoring 92 – his fourth big score of the week, which extended his lead as the top run-scorer at Cubs Week to 337 runs in four innings. No-one else contributed significantly and the Cobras lost their last wicket in the 48th over, still 47 runs behind the Dolphins.
The Dolphins still have to play the Warriors on Monday, but they cannot be overtaken in the round-robin format tournament.
The Lions won their second game in a row after losing their first two. Their Sunday clash with the Warriors went down to the wire, with the Eastern Cape side needing six runs from the final over to win. Marco Jansen sent down three dot balls and took a wicket while conceding just two runs to secure a four-run victory for the Lions.
Mickey Copeland top-scored for the Lions with 52, while Bryce Parsons once again made a valuable all-round contribution, scoring 45 runs and taking three wickets.
In the day’s other game, the Knights beat the Titans by six wickets.
