• Denly was ‘fully prepared’ for World Cup snub

England batsman Joe Denly has refused to sulk after being omitted from England’s 2019 World Cup campaign.

Denly was named in the provisional squad, but spinner Liam Dawson was preferred when the final 15 was chosen.

‘I’ve got to get on with it now and put in some performances. Before I got the call, I knew that was an avenue they could take and I was fully prepared for it,’ Denly told BBC Radio Kent.

‘Liam is a fantastic cricketer and deserves his selection. There’s no point in me moping around. I’ve got to get on with it now and I’m looking forward to putting in some performances for Kent and getting some County Championship runs under my belt.’

England’s World Cup campaign will be followed by an Ashes series – and Denly understandably will push for Test match inclusion.

‘There’s a lot of cricket between now and the Ashes, so my focus now is on performing well for Kent, and if that happens, hopefully the Ashes selection will take care of itself,’ he added.

The 33-year-old secured a stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League this year, but played just one match – and fell for a first-ball duck.
