Spinner Charlie Dean set up England’s six-wicket win over South Africa in the second women’s ODI at Kingsmead on Sunday.
Dean took 4-45 and her spin partner Sophie Ecclestone 3-27 as the Proteas Women were bowled out for 135, with England’s batters reaching the target in just 24 overs to level the series 1-1.
After losing the toss and being sent into bat, South Africa suffered early setbacks as Lauren Filer (3-32) dismissed Tazmin Brits (five) and Suné Luus (four).
Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt, who become the youngest women to play 100 ODIs, and the emerging Annerie Dercksen added 58 runs for the third wicket, before Dean and Ecclestone combined to dismiss Wolvaardt (35), Dercksen (29) and Marizanne Kapp (nought) in quick succession.
Dean then completed a hat-trick, removing Nadine de Klerk and Sinalo Jafta for ducks to leave South Africa teetering at 76-7.
Chloe Tryon’s determined 45 off 49 balls helped drag the score beyond the 100-run mark, but England soon wrapped up the innings, in 31.3 overs.
In response, England’s openers Maia Bouchier (33) and Tammy Beaumont (34) produced a 69-run stand.
Dercksen dismissed both batters, before Marizanne Kapp (1-14) trapped Heather Knight lbw for seven.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge (25*) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (20) then forged a 47-run partnership to steer England to the brink of victory, and while Sciver-Brunt fell to De Klerk (1-25), Wyatt-Hodge saw her team home.
The series decider is set for Wednesday in Potchefstroom (2pm).
