Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock is among several international stars listed for the player draft ahead of next year’s The Hundred – the England and Wales Cricket Board’s new limited-overs tournament.
England’s Eoin Morgan, Australia duo David Warner and Steve Smith, West Indian Chris Gayle, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan will also be available at 20 October’s draft.
The hard-hitting De Kock sports plenty of experience in domestic limited-overs tournaments, including stints with the Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
He recently captained the Proteas during a 1-1 T20I series draw with India, and will continue as the Cape Town Blitz’s local marquee player in the Mzansi Super League later this year.
‘The South African is relatively still young but already has a batting CV to rival anyone in world cricket. His fast hands are an asset behind the stumps, too. He scores his runs fast, and can either bat up the order or in the latter stages when an acceleration is needed. Fresh from winning the 2019 IPL with Mumbai Indians, he would be an asset to any team,’ reads a statement on The Hundred’s official website.
The Hundred will launch in mid-2020 and feature the Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Birmingham Phoenix, Trent Rockets, Western Fire, London Spirit, Oval Invincibles and Southern Brave. Former Proteas coach Gary Kirsten will work with the Fire.
