South Africa’s new limited-overs captain, Quinton de Kock, has been nominated for six top prizes at the CSA International Awards to be held on Saturday 4 July.
The wicketkeeper-batsman is on the lists for Standard Bank T20 International Cricketer of the Year, ODI Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year, SA Fans Cricketer of the Year, the SA Men’s Players’ Player of the Year and ultimately the SA Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
De Kock was nominated alongside Temba Bavuma and Lungi Ngidi in the T20 category, while Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada are the other two candidates for the best Test player.
Proteas prominent in powerful Test picks
For the award of best ODI player, De Kock is joined again by Ngidi and Heinrich Klaasen, who had a magnificent series with the bat against Australia.
De Kock, though, was the Proteas’ standout performer in what was a challenging and testing summer of cricket under the new helm of Mark Boucher.
The left-hander was the leading run-scorer in both the Test and ODI series’ against England, while he was only edged by Eoin Morgan for the most runs in the three-match T20 series.
He also led the team with distinction in the ODI campaign against Aaron Finch’s charges, which yielded an impressive 3-0 whitewash for the Proteas.
Despite missing the Test series against England through injury, Ngidi was also one of the star players for the Proteas and has been nominated in five categories, including the best men’s player with Nortje the other candidate for the top award.
In the women’s section Shabnim Ismail and Laura Wolvaardt were both nominated in a total of five categories after the successful season they had with the Proteas women’s team.
Dane van Niekerk’s team came close to sneaking into the final of this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia but narrowly lost to the hosts in the semifinal.
The gala event will, however, be done through a virtual ceremony due to restrictions from the nationwide lockdown.
It will also be the very first time women’s players have been nominated in categories alongside men’s players with the KFC Streetwise Award and the RAM Delivery of the Year.
‘Our country continues to produce world-class players. Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, Faf du Plessis and Imran Tahir all rank among the top men’s players in the world across the various formats and I think we have all been excited to see new faces such as Anrich Nortje and Janneman Malan who have emerged in the past year,’ commented Acting CEO Jacques Faul.
