Jade de Klerk’s 5-32 set up a SA U19 victory over Zimbabwe in their CSA Youth Triangular Series match at Boland Park on Wednesday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Zimbabwe were bundled out for 111 in 38.4 overs with the leg-spinner putting on a Man of the Match performances by bagging his maiden five-for.
Ryan Murray top scored with 31 runs from 62 deliveries, while the rest could not manage more than Jonathan Connolly’s 18 from 27. Besides de Klerk, Lutho Sipamla (1-25) took three catches and a wicket to assist in confining the visitors to the low total. Jason Niemand, Ruan de Swardt and Siphamandla Krweqe also chipped in with a wicket each.
SA did not get off to their desired start. They lost opener Wandile Makwetu (4) and Niemand (1), leaving the hosts on 9-2 in the second over. Jesse Christensen and captain, Wiaan Mulder, revived the innings with a 31-run third-wicket stand before the dismissal Christensen for nine.
Mulder pushed on, putting on 26 for the fifth wicket with Ruan de Swardt (12), a 20-run contribution for the sixth with Kenan Smith (12), but it was the 17-run partnership with de Klerk (2 off 20 balls) that saw the youngsters over the line. The skipper posted 49 not out, giving his side a three-wicket victory with 125 balls to spare.
South Africa will play Sri Lanka in their last round-robin match on Thursday at the same venue.
