New Zealand were all out for 293 in their first innings of the second Test against South Africa at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday.
Colin de Grandhomme was unbeaten on 120 and Daryl Mitchell made 60 with the pair rescuing New Zealand from 91-5 in a 133-run stand for the sixth wicket.
The innings ended 30 minutes after lunch.
For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada took 5-60 and Marco Jansen finished with 4-98.
At tea, the Proteas were 42-3 and leading by 113.
Tim Southee removed Sarel Erwee (eight) and Dean Elgar (13), with Matt Henry claiming Aidan Markram (14).
At the end of the session, Rassie van der Dussen was on seven with Temba Bavuma yet to score.
