The Proteas Women can boast an Olympic medallist in their ranks, as former international cricketer Viljoen took silver in the javelin on Thursday night.
Viljoen finished second behind Sara Kolak, with a best throw of 64,92m losing out to the Croatian by 1,26m. She is the ninth medalist for South Africa, who have taken one gold, six silvers and two bronze medals. She came close in 2012, but came fourth after throwing a best throw of 64,53 metres just missing out on a bronze medal to Germany’s Linda Stahl, who had a best throw of 64,91.
Viljoen played one Test for the Proteas, scoring 88 runs with a high score of 71. Her 17 ODIs consisted of 166 runs and five wickets with a high score of 54 not out.
