Wayne Parnell has been named as captain of the South Africa A side for the triangular limited overs series against Australia A and India A later this year.
Proteas and Highveld Lions opener Stephen Cook has been named as captain of the South Africa A side for the four-day series against Zimbabwe and Australia, also to be played Down Under.
There are four new caps at this level in Highveld Lions all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius, plus three quick bowlers – Sisanda Magala of the Warriors, Malusi Siboto of the Titans and Duanne Olivier of the Knights.
‘These are two very important tours as we look to build our depth in both the four-day and 50 overs formats,’ commented CSA selection convener, Linda Zondi. ‘The four newcomers have all come off outstanding franchise seasons and we will once again reward franchise players who earn the opportunity by moving them up to the next level of our talent pipeline.
‘A number of Proteas Test squad regulars, who are not involved in the current tri-series in the Caribbean, have been included in the four-day squads at the request of national coach, Russell Domingo. This will give them quality match practice ahead of the two-match Sunfoil Test Series against New Zealand in August.
‘Vernon Philander, in particular, has not had a lot of cricket, following his long-term injury lay-off.
‘Stephen Cook is one of our most experienced and successful leaders at franchise level and he is the ideal choice to fill this important role, particularly when there are a number of young and inexperienced players in the squad. Wayne Parnell gets the opportunity to develop his leadership skills in the one-day format. He was an outstanding captain of our national under-19 side and took them to the final of the U19 ICC World Cup in 2008,’ concluded Zondi.
