Dewald Brevis believes there will be opportunities for him to play for the Proteas next year.
The 20-year-old was left out of the Proteas T20I squad that drew the recent series against India, having made his international debut in the shortest form of the game against Australia in late August, scoring five and nought in two matches.
“It was very disappointing,” Brevis told Rapport newspaper of his omission. “I tried so hard to be my best, so it was sad for me not to be selected. It was really tough. But sometimes things don’t work out and then you just have to make sure make you score more runs again.
“God has a plan for me,” he added. “I’m on a journey and I can’t see what’s ahead. I just know there’s a plan. After talking to [Proteas white-ball coach] Rob Walter I believe there will be some opportunities for me next year.”
Brevis has responded to that disappointment by scoring centuries in consecutive 4-Day Series matches for the Northerns Titans – 110 from 172 balls against the EP Warriors in Centurion and 113 from 121 deliveries against the North West Dragons in Potchefstroom.
“It was really special,” said Brevis of his maiden first-class hundred. “For me, the red-ball format has always been important and I’ve always wanted to be a three-format player. So, it’s really nice to be able to score hundreds in all three formats now.
“I had to be very disciplined against the Warriors. I like to feel the ball on the bat, but there is no pressure to score runs quickly and sometimes you have to leave the ball alone.
“However, if the ball is in my area, I rely on selecting the right shot to hit a boundary. I simply had to do it for a long period of time.”
