New Proteas limited-overs coach Rob Walter says Dewald Brevis could be brought “into the mix” for the home ODI and T20I series against the West Indies in March.
Brevis, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi were the notable omissions from the Proteas ODI squad named on Wednesday for a three-match ODI series against England, which starts on 27 January in Bloemfontein.
Recently-appointed Proteas Test coach Shukri Conrad will oversee the team in that series as Walter will only return to South Africa from New Zealand on the day of the third ODI.
While there are no new faces in the SA squad for the England series, Walter told News24 that Brevis and a couple of other players would come into contention for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies (16-21 March) and the three-match T20I series (25-28 March).
“We’ll certainly look at the series against the West Indies for a potential opportunity to get him and a couple of other players into the mix.
“You don’t want to be foolish and bury your head in the sand when there’s obvious talent.
“Having a look in the SA20, Dewald’s not the only player that’s stood out. There have been several of them, and that’s been brilliant.
“In terms of his path forward, we’ll definitely have a path for him in terms of his entry into the national team.”
