Kraigg Brathwaite made an unbeaten 99 that guided the West Indies to 287-7 at stumps on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Monday.
The hosts batted first in Antigua with the captain making a patient start at the top of the order, despite losing John Campbell for only five.
The West Indies top order struggled somewhat to capitalise on their time in the middle, Kyle Mayers falling one short of a half-century, while Jermaine Blackwood and Jason Holder made respective scores of 18 and 30.
Brathwaite stood firm, though, reaching his half-century, while receiving decent assistance from Rahkeem Cornwall down the order.
The pair brought up 65 for the eighth wicket with the spinner also unbeaten on 43.
