Morne Morkel’s 300th Test wicket on day two of the third Test against Australia at Newlands is our Play of the Day.
It’s been a turbulent series so far for Morkel, who recently announced he would be retiring from all international cricket after the fourth Test match against Australia.
Having picked up three wickets in the first Test at Kingsmead, he would have expected the chance to play in Port Elizabeth, but his place went to Lungi Ngidi, who did well.
With Kagiso Rabada facing suspension ahead of the Newlands Test, Morkel was expected to fill in for his fiery young teammate. But things looked bleak again when the ban against Rabada was overturned, leading to many questioning whether the big fast bowler would ever get his chance to get to 300 wickets.
However, he was chosen ahead of Ngidi for the third Test, and did not disappoint. The emotion on his face could be seen as he picked up the wicket of Shaun Marsh as South Africa made inroads into the Australian batting order.
