Temba Bavuma admits he needs to convert his Test fifties into centuries.
Bavuma top-scored for the Proteas in their second innings against Australia at the MCG with 65 to finish 2022 with 561 Test runs at an average of 40.06.
It was his 20th fifty in 53 Tests, but yet again he was unable to add to his solitary Test century, scored against England at Newlands in 2016.
Bavuma said South Africa’s struggling batting group needed hundreds.
“The 60s and 70s could be good for a particular moment, but in a bigger scheme of things, they don’t change the outcome of a game.
“I have been guilty of that in my Test career and that’s something I’d really like to change, but not just for myself, for the team.
“That’s what the team needs, two guys to get out there and score big hundreds and give the bowlers something to rally behind.”
