• Bavuma fighting from ‘rock bottom’

Captain Temba Bavuma has implored the Jozi Stars’ string of high-profile players to make a positive impact during Friday’s Mzansi Super League fixture against the Paarl Rocks at Boland Park.

The Stars are the reigning champions, having defeated the Cape Town Blitz in last year’s inaugural final, but have since suffered four consecutive defeats.

They have Proteas pair Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks, West Indies batsman Chris Gayle and other stars in their ranks, but are still without a win this season.

‘We’re rock bottom at the moment, so every game now becomes key for us just in terms of turning things around and trying to get some momentum going,’ said Bavuma.

‘We have had opportunities to win games so far, but we just haven’t been able to do that. Guys are aware that as a team we are looking for individuals to stand up and put in match-winning performances, so that’s what the focus will be on.’

Rocks captain Faf du Plessis, meanwhile, wants to right the wrongs of Sunday’s defeat by the Tshwane Spartans.

The Rocks lost late last week’s fixture to the Spartans despite a superb half-century from England recruit James Vince.

They currently occupy fourth position in the 2019 tournament’s six-team standings, while the Stars are placed last.

‘It’s important that you try and bounce back quickly, try and rectify the mistakes you made. It’s a big game for us on Friday to make sure we can turn that momentum around quickly,’ concluded Du Plessis.
