Proteas limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma has joined the cricketing world in lavishing praise upon Devon Conway following his sensational double century on debut.
Bavuma and Conway have a long history of playing cricket together and were in the same Gauteng schools team. Speaking to Netwerk24, Bavuma said he always knew Conway had it within him to be successful on the biggest stage.
‘I’m super happy for Dev; I’ve been playing with him since we were 14, 15 years old.
‘People who played with him will not be surprised by his masterful batting performance in his Test debut.
‘He has always been an exceptionally talented player and through his determination and dedication he has shown this on the world stage.’
Bavuma, who attended school at St David’s, played Khaya Majola U19 cricket week with Conway, who was a pupil at St John’s College. The two players’ careers diverged thereafter with Bavuma making his way into the Proteas set-up while Conway struggled in the world of professional cricket.
Eventually Conway left South Africa in 2017 after unsuccessful stints at both the Lions and Dolphins. Through dedication and determination he rose through the ranks in New Zealand, however, and has found his way to the heights of the international game.
