Azhar Ali fell just seven runs short of a century as Pakistan posted a strong first innings total against New Zealand.
There were also notable batting performances from Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 61, and Faheem Ashraf (48), as Pakistan ended the day’s play on 293 all out.
Ali starred though, building patiently through a 173-ball innings. His composure helped steady things for Pakistan, who were 83-4 at one stage. However, Ali and Rizwan shared a 88-run partnership that got the tourists back into the contest.
Pakistan’s middle order then got stuck in to put the side in a decent position going into day two.
Kyle Jamieson was the pick of New Zealand’s bowlers, taking 5/69.
