• Another super over defeat for Black Caps

New Zealand suffered a third super over defeat in six months on Wednesday.

The latest loss was to India in Wednesday’s third T20I at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Seamer Tim Southee was bowling against batsmen Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Sharma hit successive sixes to seal victory for the tourists.

Super overs haven’t been too successful for us, so we needed to be a little bit better to win it in regular time. A great game of cricket, India again showed their experience in crunch situations. It is a really important experience for us to take from and move on,’ said New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on Wednesday.

‘Very disappointing after coming off from an effort like that. It was disappointing not to cross the finishing line. It is a game of small margins.’

The Black Caps had lost a T20I super over to England in November 2019, too. The venue was the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, where Southee was also the bowler.

July 2019’s World Cup final between England and New Zealand culminated in a super over. Fast bowler Trent Boult conceded 15 runs to England pair Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes. The number wasn’t enough, as Buttler and Stokes drew the scores level again. England won, controversially, on the back of a superior boundary count.
