• Anderson out, Roy retained for third Test

England have named an unchanged squad for the third Ashes series Test, which will get under way at Headingley in Leeds on Thursday.

James Anderson has remained sidelined due to injury. Anderson bowled a mere four overs in the series opener and was ruled out of the second completely.

‘Anderson is making progress from his injured right calf. He will step up his rehabilitation this week by playing for Lancashire second XI against Leicestershire in a three-day friendly at Northern Cricket Club, Liverpool,’ read a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Opening batsman Jason Roy has been retained despite managing a mere 40 runs in four innings across the series so far.

Australia boast a one-nil lead in the five-match series. They won the Edgbaston Test by 251 runs, after successive centuries from batsman Steven Smith and Nathan Lyon’s nine wickets.

The Lord’s match was drawn, but headlined by a superb debut from fast bowler Jofra Archer. The Barbados-born pace ace reached speeds of up to 96 miles (155km) per hour and felled Smith and substitute batsman Marnus Labuschagne with fierce bouncers.

Squad: Jason Roy, Rory Burns, Joe Root (c), Joe Denly, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, Sam Curran.
