Kyle Abbott’s Man of the Match 6-77 is our Play of the Day.
Celebrations came earlier than expected for the Proteas thanks to Kyle Abbott, who ripped through more than half of Australia’s line-up. After Dale Steyn’s injury, it was a toss up between Morne Morkel and Abbott to take his place as fans and pundits remained split on the decision.
The 29-year-old continues to step up to the challenge whenever he’s called upon. He was rewarded for his performance in the recent ODI series against Australia, where he took a total of six wickets in two matches.
In his first performance against the Baggy Greens, he took 3-41 in Australia’s first innings to help skittle them for 85, and he backed up his good start with a dominant performance in their second innings, taking six wickets to help bowl the Aussies out for 161.
Abbott’s match figures of 9-121 made him the only South African to take nine wickets at the Bellerive Oval. It was his third five-wicket haul in Tests and first against Australia.
