The Trent Bridge pitch on which England amassed the highest total in the history of ODI cricket against Australia last year will be used for Monday’s World Cup fixture against Pakistan.

The same pitch that yielded 2018’s 481 for six saw England produced 444 for three – the second largest ODI total – against Pakistan in 2016.

England, meanwhile, are considering recalling fast bowler Mark Wood to the XI. Wood could prove effective alongside fellow seamer Jofra Archer.

‘I think playing Wood will be discussed. The captain will make a call on it. Wood and Archer let it go at our guys. It’s good preparation for them. We talk about what you have to be good at and, generally, playing pace and spin is high on the agenda,’ said batting coach Graham Thorpe.

‘We had spoken about the possibility of teams starting with spin. So sometimes in training, our players will start against spin and sometimes they’ll start against pace. They have to be prepared for everything.’

The hosts gathered 311 for eight in Thursday’s tournament opener at The Oval, where South Africa slipped to a 104-run defeat. Opener Jason Roy, Test captain Joe Root and all-rounder Ben Stokes struck half-tons, but failed to convert to three figures.

‘We didn’t quite unlock the door in terms of our batting at The Oval. We couldn’t really let go, because we kept losing wickets at crucial times. We had to keep trying to put on those mini-partnerships and that was really good of us to do that,’ added Thorpe.
