    Former Proteas captain Hansie Cronje died on 1 June 2002. He played in three World Cups in 1992, 1996 and 1999.

    Fourth best World Cup captaincy record

    • Cronje has the joint-ninth most World Cup matches as captain. Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and India’s Kapil Dev also have 15. Cronje won 11 of his 15 – the fourth best ratio in the top 10, after Australian Ricky Ponting’s 26 in 29, West Indian Clive Lloyd’s 15 in 17 and Indian Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 14 in 17.

    More than Cullinan, less than du Plessis

    • He has the ninth most World Cup runs among South Africans. His 476 in 20 innings is flanked by the eighth-placed Faf du Plessis’ 544 in 14 and 10th-placed Daryll Cullinan 471 in 15.

    Faisalabad best

    • His highest score was 78 struck against New Zealand in Faisalabad during the 1996 tournament. The innings spanned just 64 deliveries – and featured 11 fours and three sixes. South Africa won the match.

    Snell, Pringle and Cronje

    • The right-armer took eight wickets in 23 World Cup appearances. That’s one more than fellow seamer Craig Matthews – and as many as former team-mates Richard Snell and Meyrick Pringle – and spinner JP Duminy.

    Greater than Gibbs

    • Cronje took 10 catches across three World Cup campaigns in 1992, 1996 and 1999. That’s as many as former fielding dynamo Herschelle Gibbs, but in two less matches.
