The South African Broadcasting Corporation has confirmed the screening of a limited number of matches during the 2019 World Cup.

The free-to-air SABC’s Monday confirmation came after negotiations with pay channel SuperSport.

‘Some of these fixtures [will be broadcast] on a live basis and others delayed and via highlights programmes. The SABC will announce details regarding its broadcast schedule of the matches shortly,’ read a statement from the SABC.

How many of the 48 fixtures, including two semi-finals and the final, will be screened live have not yet been confirmed. The SABC were the chosen broadcaster for the inaugural Mzansi Super League late last year.

‘This is a landmark moment for cricket in South Africa,’ said Cricket South Africa chief executive Thabang Moroe at the time.

‘For the first time, South Africa’s premier public broadcaster will have exclusive rights to a major cricket event, and this is very much in line with CSA’s vision of making cricket a truly national sport of excellence that is accessible to all.’

South Africa played two warm-up fixtures against Sri Lanka in Cardiff and the West Indies in Bristol last week. They beat the Sri Lankans and shared a washout with the West Indians. Opening batsman Hashim Amla struck a half-century in each match. The Proteas’ World Cup campaign will open against England at The Oval in London on Thursday.
