Dale Steyn says he doesn’t mind playing second fiddle to New Zealand swing bowler Trent Boult for the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the IPL.

Steyn made his first IPL start in 2015 for the Sunrisers at the weekend after they decided to rest Boult. Sunrisers captain David Warner had previously explained that Steyn was struggling to get a game due to Boult superior form.

Still the world’s best Test bowler, Steyn has struggled to replicate that form in the shorter formats of the game. Boult, on the other hand, had a great World Cup where he finished as the joint leading wicket-taker with 22 scalps.

For now, Steyn  says he’s happy operating in Boult’s shadow.

‘Trent has just come out of a fantastic World Cup where he had 20-odd wickets,’ Steyn told iplt20.com.

‘He offers something different to the team being a left-arm swing bowler and we have got a bunch of right-arm bowlers in the side. So it is nice to have that difference. I have got no problems losing out on a place to Trent. He was the in-form bowler coming out of the World Cup and it would have been silly if he was the guy on the bench at the start of the IPL.’

Steyn now wants to get a chance to bowl in tandem with Boult, believing their skills could complement each other.

‘I think bowling alongside Trent would be amazing especially after the kind of World Cup that he has had. You kind of just feed off that energy. I am a player who enjoys playing with players that have got good energy about them.

‘David Warner is another kind of guy who has just won the World Cup. It is great to play alongside him because you can just feel all the passion and the energy that he has especially after winning that World Cup.’

Boult, ranked No 6 in the Test bowling rankings behind leader Steyn, and six in the ODI bowling rankings to Steyn’s four, has made a solid start to his IPL career.

In three matches he has claimed five wickets in 12 overs at a cost of 101. His best figures are 3-36 with an economy rate of 8.41.
