A superb performance from South African all-rounder David Wiese and a swashbuckling cameo from AB de Villiers proved in vain, as the Royal Challengers Bangalore slipped to a 18 run defeat to the Mumbai Indians in Sunday’s entertaining Indian Premier League match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Wiese, on IPL debut, snared telling figures of four for 33 and later struck a quickfire 47 not out, but was unable to prevent Mumbai from reaching a maiden 2015 victory, and Bangalore’s fall to the bottom of the eight-team standings.

Selected ahead of West Indian Darren Sammy and Australian Sean Abbott, Wiese justified the faith by securing the fourth-best figures of this year’s tournament. His four-for included three wickets in one over and the very valuable dismissals of dangerous duo Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai’s final total of 209 for seven, built on the back of fine half-centuries from opener Lendl Simmons and the young Unmukt Chand ultimately proved ample, regardless. Bangalore, despite the hard-hitting Wiese’s 47 not out from 25 deliveries and De Villiers’ 41 from a mere 11, managed to reach only 191 for seven in reply.

Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh was named Man of the Match after removing the powerful Chris Gayle and Manvinder Bisla relatively cheaply, and Proteas star Rilee Rossouw for a first-ball duck. New Zealander Mitchell McClenaghan, picked ahead of South African Marchant de Lange, was largely ineffective –and expensive.
