• Klaas hat-trick sinks Pakistan

A hat-trick from Masabata Klaas saw the Proteas women beat their Pakistan counterparts by eight wickets in the second ODI at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Thursday.

Seamer Klaas removed Aliya Riaz, Umaima Sohail and Sidra Nawaz with consecutive deliveries en route to final figures of 3-27 in Pakistan’s total of 147 all out in 42 overs. She was well supported by Sune Luus, Tumi Sekhukhune and Marizanne Kapp, who snared two wickets each.

The 28-year-old Klaas’ hat-trick marked the 10th in women’s ODI cricket – and the second by a South African. Dane van Niekerk achieved the feat against the West Indies at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts, six years ago.

The Proteas’ pursuit was spearheaded by Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolwaardt, who shared a 76-run stand for the first wicket. Lee was characteristically aggressive on her way to 40 from 43 deliveries, while Wolwaardt gathered 74 not out from 114. Captain Luus, too, was at hand for a complementary 21 not out and ensure victory with 80 deliveries to spare.

The result levelled the three-match series one-all, after Pakistan had won the first ODI by eight wickets. The third and final ODI will be played at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday. Five T20Is will follow in Pietermaritzburg, Benoni and Pretoria.
